I have been reading True Horsemanship Through Feel by Bill Dorrance and Leslie Desmond. One of the recurring ideas is how important feeling balanced is to a horse’s sense of security while working and being ridden. How quickly things digress when a horse is working out-of-balance… the speed picks up, the emotions rise (often in the rider, too!), and that can quickly turn into a disharmonious ride at best and a wreck at worst!
As I study and learn about the “inner game” of collection with Borrego, I am noticing how much his emotional state is linked to his physical balance and ability to stay in self-carriage. The moments when I’ve got it feel light, connected, effortless. Learning to “not be greedy” as Julie says, and accept just a few lovely steps and not push for more is paying off in increased relaxation for both Borrego and I.
