First Liberty Session with Orion

I have been looking forward to working with Orion at liberty.  I don’t have video of the entire session, just some segments which I hope you will enjoy.

In the first session, Orion seemed not to know what do when turned loose.  He first left me and ran around the arena, then he started looking around a bit and shying at things, leaping into the air and running off.  Then he began to look for me.  Instead of the normal communication process I do in the round pen where I work to develop changing of directions, then a hq at liberty, I tried something different.  I had chosen to work him in the arena due to his size (He is 16.3HH).  When he looked at me I decided to see if I could just start to cue the “come to me” with the stick and string as the first thing I taught him to do.  Amazingly enough he came right to me.

While there is much more to do for liberty development, this is a great start.  I love how he is starting to hunt me up!  Such an awesome feeling when he locks eyes on me and comes to me!  I love it!!

I did it! Ozzie and I published!

I did it!  I finally published the story of Ozzie, the horse that changed everything for me!  Ozzie was with me for more than 25 years and is the reason I study horsemanship!  Many of you have met Ozzie, who passed away a year ago.  But few of you know about our early days together.  Ozzie was a challenging horse with a big personality, and I was madly in love with him, even though he was not suitable for me at all.  He would push me and cause chaos wherever he went in his early days.  Thanks to him, I sought out help from a friend who lead me to the path of horsemanship!  And I have never looked back!
