Focus Words for 2012: Balance and Fun

Having focus words for the year last year really helped me not only with my horses, but also with my life!  This year’s words are Balance and Fun (with a side of Joy).  For me, balance is a great word because it applies in so many ways-balancing my time, myself with my horse, where my attentions go, my work and my personal life.  And fun is a critical word for me as it just seems I get task oriented and forget to have fun along the way or postpone the fun until I am done with the job or my work.  As Kendra and I shared our words for the year, she suggested it would be fun to have someone pick a word for her, then in classic Kendra way, she said that the word she picked for me was Joy.  I liked the word so much I added it as a side word!

So, 3 weeks into the new year, I am doing good on the word fun as I am just back from a 5 day vacation where I, for the first time in years, did not take any work with me and I unplugged from my beloved iphone!  I suppose by focusing on fun, I also added some balance to my life!  And coming home refreshed and ready for work I felt joy!  Joy, because I love my job which I think of as my life’s work, and I love my farm because it is my home and home to all my wonderful animals.  It was great to go away, but was also great to come home!

Have you picked your words for 2012?  How’s it going so far?  If you are having a little trouble, don’t worry.  Remember, you have the whole year to work on these words.  Be gentle with yourself first.  Offer yourself what it is you most want from the world and you will feel things begin to shift.  Spend some undemanding time with your horse and reflect on what your words mean to you!  Leave a comment and let me know how it’s going!

I did it! Ozzie and I published!

I did it!  I finally published the story of Ozzie, the horse that changed everything for me!  Ozzie was with me for more than 25 years and is the reason I study horsemanship!  Many of you have met Ozzie, who passed away a year ago.  But few of you know about our early days together.  Ozzie was a challenging horse with a big personality, and I was madly in love with him, even though he was not suitable for me at all.  He would push me and cause chaos wherever he went in his early days.  Thanks to him, I sought out help from a friend who lead me to the path of horsemanship!  And I have never looked back!
