So, when it comes to horses, I always consider the health and physical well being first! In the case of Orion, his feet needed attention first.
He had a quarter crack and it looked like he was very overdue for a trim. When it originally happened, the quarter crack went all the way up into the coronet band and bled. (OUCH!) It has started to grow out but was in need of some attention. The crack had gotten some bacteria growing and needed to be scraped out, then reset and re-casted. See the pics…
Once his feet were “good as new”, it was on to cleaning him up. While giving him a bath I noticed his sheath was a little swollen, so I decided to clean it. What I found when I did this was shocking! As you know, you clean the sheath to remove the bean…well this was a bean the size of a strawberry! I have no idea how this poor guy urinated! Sorry if you find the next picture gross.
I know he had to feel much better with this gone!
Next up for him will be his teeth. I am sure there are sharp points, but the dentist can’t get here until June. He is eating just fine and has already put some weight on, so I feel waiting a month or so won’t be a problem.
