Nina: a case study in emotional fitness

IMG_5266It is my pleasure to welcome Nina to AHA (Aiken Horsemanship Academy).

She is in our Foundations Program to help her with some troubles her owner and trainer have been experiencing.  For example, she does not trailer well alone.  In fact, in a straight load trailer she has climbed into the manger in a panic.  Not good.    She doesn’t settle well when she travels to shows (she’s and her owner compete in Eventing) and becomes totally attached to the horse she trailer to the show with.  Not good.  And there’s more…..

After an initial evaluation, I felt that this mare was not emotionally fit.  When it comes to horses, I consider three areas of fitness:  Physical, Mental and Emotional and all are equally important, especially for the competition horse.

To make a long and involved story short, after 3 weeks of making good progress at her barn, the owner and trainer decided to send her in for some intensive work to help her “get back to a relaxed, safe, and enjoyable horse”.

I thought it might be fun to look at her as a case study and hope you enjoy hearing her story of her time with me at AHA.

Stay tuned for more!

I did it! Ozzie and I published!

I did it!  I finally published the story of Ozzie, the horse that changed everything for me!  Ozzie was with me for more than 25 years and is the reason I study horsemanship!  Many of you have met Ozzie, who passed away a year ago.  But few of you know about our early days together.  Ozzie was a challenging horse with a big personality, and I was madly in love with him, even though he was not suitable for me at all.  He would push me and cause chaos wherever he went in his early days.  Thanks to him, I sought out help from a friend who lead me to the path of horsemanship!  And I have never looked back! Don’t forget to get your copy on Amazon.com.
