Some horses are slow to think and process, and their brains seize up with worry when they are faced with a new problem. These horses can seem dull or stubborn or look like they’re not paying attention when actually they are frozen with nervousness. Sometimes they can even push into pressure or start moving in a clumsy or reactive way. Because they aren’t thinking, it’s important that you go very slowly to allow the horse to relax enough to check back in with you. It can be tempting to increase your pressure or speed the horse up, but until he’s feeling safe and calm again it will only make things worse! Borrego taught me a lot about this…..
